Thousands of President Abdurrahman Wahid’s supporters attacked a college campus Monday and burned the offices of political opponents who want to speed up his possible impeachment over two corruption scandals.
The unrest in Wahid’s home province of East Java followed huge demonstrations against him in the capital last week and took place just hours before legislators handed documents to police that they say link Wahid to two corruption scandals.
Lawmakers said the maneuver could bring separate criminal proceedings against Wahid.
On Tuesday newspapers reported that some of Indonesia’s key political power brokers were trying to arrange a special session of the top legislature, opening the way for impeachment proceedings against Wahid.
