This is regarding “Dress codes” (Voice of the people, April 7). As a youngster growing up and attending a Chicago grade school during the Depression years, I will share my experience on “creativity and expression” through individual choice of dress.
I grew up poor like so many other Chicago students. All we less-fortunate students were ridiculed because of our shabby clothing. I have 60-year-old school pictures that I’m not proud of. How I wished I could be dressed as well as those other kids.
A dress code would have made me an equal.
Depression days are gone, but a vast majority of students are still intimidated by the wealthier who are dressed decently. Creativity and self-expression could be achieved through good academic behavior.
Take it from someone who’s been there.
