A National Archives employee was charged with theft Monday for allegedly stealing dozens of historical documents and selling them through the Internet on eBay.
At least 100 documents were stolen, including presidential pardons and slave trade materials, worth at least $100,000. About 60 have been recovered, authorities said.
Prosecutors said Shawn Aubitz, 45, simply put the items in his briefcase and left the field office in downtown Philadelphia. The 14-year employee was charged with one count of theft for allegedly taking the documents between 1996 and 1999.
Federal officials are working to tighten security at the 68-year-old agency, according to National Archives Inspector General Paul Brachfeld.
