The Justice Department says it has reopened an investigation into one of Mexico’s most notorious slayings, the 1993 shooting of Roman Catholic Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo.
The announcement that the case was secretly reopened nine months ago was made Friday amid a bitter feud between current and former law-enforcement agents and church figures.
Federal investigations have determined Posadas was shot May 24, 1993, when drug traffickers confused his luxury car with that of a rival they were trying to ambush at Guadalajara’s airport. The Justice Department had declared the case closed in July 2000.
But some church officials have refused to accept that verdict, arguing the cardinal had been targeted.
