Little ones are always having to use bathrooms built for big people.

It’s not only thoughtful to consider the children when you’re outfitting one of the most-used rooms in the house, it also can be safer.

Here are some ideas from interior designer Barbara Schmidt and American Standard, a manufacturer of bathroom fixtures:

– Place a step stool near the bathtub so tots can climb in and out easily with an adult’s supervision. Make sure the tub is slip-proof and, of course, never leave children unattended while bathing.

– Designate a lower drawer or cabinet for towels, toys and other bath items, so children can have easy access.

– Transfer shampoo into small plastic bottles so children can learn how to pour their own with your supervision.

– A shower curtain with a breathable pocket is a great place to store toys without promoting mildew growth.

– To avoid scalding, water heaters should not exceed 120 degrees. For added safety, install a faucet with safety stops that offer adjustable settings and restrict how far the handle can be pushed toward hot.
