The Buffalo Grove Police Department on Tuesday named a 27-year department veteran to replace Police Chief Leo McCann, who retired this month.

Steve Balinski, 49, has spent his entire career with the department. He was hired in 1976 after receiving a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement administration from Western Illinois University.

“I was interested in becoming a chief the day I started work in law enforcement,” said Balinski, who is moving up from deputy chief.

Keeping abreast of technological advances in law enforcement and “doing more with less” during an economic downturn are among his immediate concerns, Balinski said.

Balinski also has volunteered for the Illinois Special Olympics and the local Rotary Club.
