The city will join Batavia and Geneva in a broadband-feasibility study to determine what can be done to improve Internet access for businesses in each community.

The City Council voted unanimously to share the cost of a $27,875 project by Atlanta-based Icon Broadband Technologies that will include a survey of the city’s business community needs, said Larry Maholland, village administrator. A survey would take 60 to 90 days to complete, he said.

“The survey is actually a small part of it,” Maholland said. “IBT will map out where our businesses exist, where they are clustered, determine opportune fiber routes and work out a business plan.”

St. Charles has about 1,450 businesses.

A city-sponsored survey last winter reflected a growing need by businesses for better Internet services.
