The Chicago Park District banned swimming at North Avenue Beach on Thursday after tests revealed high levels of E. coli bacteria in water samples taken Wednesday. The beach remained open for other activities, and Chicago’s 30 other beaches were open for swimming Thursday.

Factors that contribute to high E. coli levels in lake water include high temperatures, heavy rainfall, animal waste and low lake levels, according to the Park District.
