Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

A visionary and often misunderstood artist who took tango to radical new levels of creativity by merging it with jazz, avant-garde and classical music, bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla never made a bad record. This explains why this compilation, although far from definitive, is still satisfying. Perhaps the most inspired choice is the inclusion of “20 Years Ago,” a dreamy track from a largely forgotten 1975 collaboration with saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. Unfortunately, many of Piazzolla’s classic anthems are presented in uneven versions culled from concert recordings (“Adios Nonino” in particular), and a whole five tracks are devoted to so-so music from a couple of Argentine movies. Still, the man’s bewitching passion shines through.
