Some of Ken Williams’ rival executives sense he is working behind the scenes, but the White Sox general manager reiterated that no trade is imminent before Monday’s 3 p.m. non-waiver trading deadline.
“My phone is in the television [booth],” Williams said Sunday in the dining room at Camden Yards.
“You guys haven’t seen me carry my computer in the past three days.”
After acquiring backup catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. and reliever Mike MacDougal in separate trades last week, Williams stressed that he wasn’t actively pursuing a trade despite his reputation as a dealer.
Despite this month’s slide, Williams believes the current Sox personnel is strong enough to contend, adding that there are ample reinforcements in the minor leagues in the event of an injury or when rosters can be expanded on Sept. 1.
