A man accused of raping a 10-year-old girl told police in his defense that he thought she was 12 or 13, prosecutors said Sunday.
Marcelo Lara-Cantellano, 19, of the 3200 block of South Kedvale Avenue, is accused of assaulting the girl two times in September and October, prosecutors and court records said.
While working at a mini-mart, he asked the girl to accompany him to a railroad park in the 3300 block of South Keeler Avenue, Cook County Assistant State’s Atty. Lorraine Scaduto said in Bond Court. Once there, he pulled off her clothes and assaulted her, she said.
Lara-Cantellano was arrested Saturday at his home after the girl told a neighbor about the rape.
Judge Maura Slattery Boyle ordered Lara-Cantellano held in lieu of $275,000 bail.
