Selva Lewis “Lew” Burdette, most valuable player of the 1957 World Series when he pitched the Milwaukee Braves to their only championship, died Tuesday in Winter Haven, Fla., after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 80.
A two-time All-Star and a member of the Braves’ Hall of Fame, Burdette was 203-144 with a 3.66 ERA from 1950-67. He also pitched a no-hitter.
Burdette pitched three complete-game victories, including 24 straight scoreless innings, over the Yankees in the 1957 Series. He also pitched for the Cubs in 1964, going 9-9.
– Reds right-hander Aaron Harang avoided arbitration by agreeing to a four-year, $36.5 million contract. . . . Outfielder Eric Byrnes and the Diamondbacks settled on a one-year, $4,575,000 deal.
– Miguel Tejada got two hits and drove in a run as the Dominican Republic won the Caribbean Series, beating Mexico 5-3 in Carolina, Puerto Rico.
