Oprah Winfrey has received worldwide acclaim — and now she has her own week.

Winfrey, who has owned the airwaves since her 1984 arrival in Chicago, will be recognized during the first week of each February in Illinois.

The resolution creating “Oprah Winfrey Week” was introduced by Rep. Eddie Washington (D-Waukegan) and won Illinois House approval last month. It was given final approval Friday on a voice vote in the state Senate. The resolution notes Winfrey’s impact on TV, publishing, film, philanthropy, education and health.

“We can maybe take that week and show her how much we really love her,” said the Senate sponsor, Chicago Democrat Iris Martinez. The commemoration begins next February.
