Life has been a whirlwind for Wesley Autrey since the 50-year-old construction worker rescued a fellow New Yorker from an oncoming subway train in January. President Bush gave him a shout-out and Mayor Michael Bloomberg awarded him New York City’s top civilian honor.
And last week, Autrey popped up on NBC’s “Deal or No Deal” with Howie Mandel. Although he won just $25, the show gave him a new Jeep, citing his heroism.
That was good enough for Autrey, who said he’s still hounded for pictures and autographs almost five months after he first made headlines. “I went just for the fun of it,” he told us. “It was a mini-vacation that was needed.”
Yep. Even heroes need a break.
