Need more evidence of a presidency in disarray? Of a White House advance operation with shaky chops?
Read the White House pool report about where President Bush had lunch today.
Pool report #3
Lunch at Slyman’s Restaurant
Cleveland, Ohio.
The motorcade pulled up alongside Joe and Freddy Slyman’s Restaurant, at St. Clair and 31 St. The sign proclaims it the home of “Cleveland’s Biggest Corned Beef Sandwich.”
The place, a tiny neighborhood joint in a part of the city that appears now to be largely Asian, was packed to the gills even before your pool squeezed in.
The president posed for pictures with the proprietor, urged your pool to “make sure you all buy some sandwiches,” and then sat down at a long table with aides including Rove and Hagin.
A waitress said the corned beef sandwiches are “this high,” holding her fingers about two inches apart, and said they sell for $8.25.
According to background materials from the White House, the guests include: Rep. LaTourrette, Larry Dolan, owner of the Cleveland Indians; Alex Machaskee, president and CEO of Alex Machaskee & Assoc.; Harry Meyer III, chairman and CEO of KeyCorp; Melissa Olmstead, worldwide director of Human Resources, Aleris Int’l; John Stropki, Jr., president and CEO of The Lincoln Company; and Tom Zenty III, president and CEO of University Hospitals Health System.
Your pool was then returned to our vans, where we are working our way through some of these Slyman’s sandwiches. We’re holding.

Swamp note: What’s wrong you ask?
Slyman’s is a perfectly good corned beef sandwich, but it is neither the biggest, nor the best, for that matter, in Cleveland.
That would be, on both counts, Goodman’s, at Pearl and Brookpark. At $7.70, cheaper, too.
