Move the city
Thank you to Steve Chapman for reminding us of the lessons of Valmeyer, Ill. (Relocating may be better than building,” Commentary, Aug. 30). The smart citizens of Valmeyer chose not to waste the FEMA money granted to them rebuilding in a flood-prone area. Instead they used it to relocate their town to higher ground. Why can’t we see this brand of common sense applied in New Orleans?

Thanks for Augie’s
Thank you for your moving article on the closing of Augie’s Restaurant in Andersonville (“Patrons, staff savor last meals at Augie’s,” Metro, Aug. 23).
When I was a kid, my parents would treat me to dinner at Augie’s every Friday night. The now-shuttered restaurant will remain a permanent fixture in the hearts (and stomachs) of those of us who had the pleasure of being greeted by a smiling owner and his wait staff who, I swear, had sensors telling them when our coffee cups needed refilling.

Absent from war
How ironic that President George Bush should invoke the ghost of Vietnam when talking about Iraq. (“Bush cites past wars for lessons on Iraq,” Page 1, Aug. 23).
Both he and Vice President Dick Cheney managed to avoid Vietnam altogether and no one in the either of their immediate families has volunteered for active duty in Iraq.
As always, they want someone else to do the fighting.

Justice finally
Atty. Gen. Alberto Gonzales has resigned.
Justice is served.
