Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Instead of paying for music online, would you rather get it free? Of course you would.

But what if that freedom comes at the price of still more advertising?

SpiralFrog.com, a much-publicized new service with the rights to some major catalogs, is betting there’s a market for its bargain, which starts at making you endure ads to get your free tunes. You also can’t burn CDs from the songs you download, download more than one song at once (because the site needs you to see ads), or download in anything other than Windows’ WMA file format.

The site was balky Monday, probably because there was a lot of press about it having just come out of beta, meaning a lot of folks were trying it out.

But my gut reaction to the concept, even if the site were running smoothly enough to give it a full assessment, is to shrug my shoulders. I suppose I could work in another window or tab while the ads run, but I absolutely don’t want to be prevented from making a CD to play in my car.
