A military investigation into a fatal air crash above the Amazon rain forest last year concluded that five air traffic controllers were among those responsible, according to a report that became public on Tuesday.
Brazil’s air traffic control system is run by the armed forces, and the military report indicates “crimes were committed” by the five officers. They could face suspension, prison or discharge. However a military judge rejected the findings, calling them “inept” and saying violations weren’t specified.
The incident occurred Sept. 29 last year when a Legacy private jet clipped the wing of a Gol Boeing 737-800. All 154 people aboard the Boeing died. The two American pilots in the Legacy survived and face trial for “exposing an aircraft to danger.”
