What do cell phones, nuclear reactions and the top quark have in common?
They were all developed in Chicago, of course.
A list of Chicago’s top 10 scientific achievements and discoveries, compiled by a jury of local science professionals, was unveiled Tuesday at Daley Plaza as part of the kickoff for Chicago Science in the City, a two-week program featuring carnivals, museum exhibits, lectures and films throughout Chicago.
The list didn’t include notable achievements such as Tinkertoys and the zipper, but it did include:
– Demonstration of the first controlled nuclearreaction
– Invention of the first portable cell phone
– Development of hormone treatment of prostate and breast cancer
– Invention of magnetic recording
– Development of treatment for malaria
– Development of the skyscraper
– Discovery of the top quark
– Discovery of chromosome abnormalities in cancer
– Development of carbon-14 dating
– Discovery of the human body’s process for making insulin
