The FBI has opened an investigation into alleged hate crimes at the site of a Home Depot under construction in South Elgin, authorities said Tuesday. Construction workers discovered a racial slur last week that was written in spray paint on a countertop at the home-improvement store. About a week earlier, a noose was found hanging near an exit to the building’s garden center, police said.
