A South Loop man was charged with drunken driving and other traffic offenses Thursday after police said he struck a man on the Near North Side and then sped from the scene.

Jose Castaneda, 25, of the 1300 block of South Prairie Avenue, was cited for driving under the influence striking a pedestrian in the roadway and failure to report an accident, Chicago Police Officer Laura Kubiak said.

Castaneda was driving a 1999 Chrysler south in the 1500 block of North Kingsbury Street when he sideswiped a cab and struck the man who had just gotten out about 2:20 a.m., Kubiak said.

The victim, Ruben Zarco, 51, was paying the cab fare when he was hit, Kubiak said. He was taken in stable condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
