Daley moves to limit foreclosures

With problems mounting in Chicago, Mayor Daley announced Friday that the city will push for state laws designed to help homeowners, renters and neighborhoods affected by mortgage foreclosures. “If we don’t continue to address this challenge, we run the risk that whole streets in many parts of our city may be at risk,” Daley said at a South Side news conference. Pending bills backed by Daley would create a fund to pay for homeowner counseling, extend the time some renters can stay in buildings that are in foreclosure and make it easier for municipalities to gain control of vacant and abandoned properties.

Teen injured in stabbing

A 16-year-old girl was critically injured Thursday night in a stabbing on the Northwest Side that police said may have stemmed from a quarrel over a boyfriend. The attack occurred about 7:15 p.m. at Kildare Avenue and Palmer Street in Hermosa, Officer Laura Kubiak said. She said the victim was quarreling with a girl who used to date her boyfriend and the other girl stabbed her. Paramedics took the girl to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, a Fire Department spokesman said. Kubiak said detectives were questioning the other girl Friday morning but no charges had been filed. [TRIBUNE]
