A winning ticket?
Even with an unpopular war and a struggling economy, American voters appear ready to return the presidency to the Republicans for four more years.
By her negative campaigning, Hillary Clinton did the Republicans’ dirty work for them by damaging Barack Obama to the point where he is unlikely to win the general election.
But Clinton would fare even worse if she manages to manipulate the nomination for herself, since many Obama supporters — especially African-Americans — would just sit out the election.
I think the Democrats only have a chance now if they put forth a different candidate, and I would like to nominate Al Gore.
This could be accomplished by having all the uncommitted superdelegates agree to remain that way, and if nobody gets a first ballot majority at the convention, the delegates can then vote for whomever they want.
As the presumed winner of the overall primary popular vote, Obama should be Gore’s running mate.
I believe that this is the ticket that could defeat John McCain.

Educated voting
Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page recently commented on a possible end to presidential debates (“Presidential debates on TV in peril,” Commentary, April 23).
I think there should also be an end to polls and political endorsements.
Only then will people be compelled to listen to a candidate’s views on issues and then cast an educated vote.

Protect U.S.
As I read daily reports of the civil unrest in warring nations, I feel that the entire world has become mad and the United States is the keeper of the insane asylum.
It’s time to throw away the keys to the madhouse and concentrate on protecting this country.
