Politically, the arts community traditionally skews Democratic and liberal, and that bias is reflected in campaign contributions to the two major parties. In such fields as motion pictures and recorded music, more than 80 percent of the donations in this election cycle have gone to the Democratic Party and its candidates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign funding.
The center breaks down by selected industries donations to the two major presidential candidates. The most relevant to the arts and entertainment field is the sector identified as “TV/movies/music,” which also includes theatrical production and performance.
Contributors in that sector provided $4.7 million to Obama in the current election cycle through June 30, but it gave just $815,451 to McCain. That industry was the eighth-largest source of funds for the Obama campaign; it ranked 18th for the McCain campaign.
