A Joliet woman three weeks out from her wedding was charged with drunken driving and suffered a broken neck after her car struck a median near the United Center on Thursday and rolled into a bicyclist, officials said.

Cook County Circuit Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered that Sheila B. Kane be held on $200,000 bond on charges including DUI and aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm.

Kane, 30, remained at Stroger Hospital on Sunday as her attorney sought her release on bond and a transfer to another hospital. Kane is to be married Sept. 24, said her attorney, and suffered a fractured vertebra in the crash.

Prosecutors said Kane’s blood alcohol level was measured at 0.2 at the hospital, more than twice the 0.08 legal limit. They said Kane had consumed six “tall glasses” of vodka and water at a bar within two hours of taking the wheel of her 2008 Mercury Sable.

A police report said Kane was slurring as she told officers at the hospital that she had three drinks. She also allegedly refused to submit to a blood alcohol test.

The bicyclist, Frederick Johnson, of the 3800 block of West Taylor Street, is on a ventilator in critical condition with bleeding in the brain, prosecutors said.
