A man shot in the back of the head early Monday remained lucid enough to drive himself six blocks to a hospital, Chicago police said.

The 36-year-old man was in his Ford Focus when a gunshot struck him in the head in the 1300 block of East 74th Street in the Grand Crossing neighborhood about 12:03 a.m., police said.

The shooting may have been a drive-by, police said.

Still conscious, the man drove to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, where he was interviewed by police, said Officer Ronald Gaines, a police spokesman.

The man’s condition was stabilized before he was transferred to Stroger Hospital, police said.

Police were still investigating. No arrests had been made, and the motive remained unclear.
