Dunbar’s Darvell Harris dropped back to pass, but only long enough to set up a quarterback draw.
He started running, paused, danced, then stopped altogether while deciding what to do.
When you run and throw as well as Harris, choosing between them isn’t always easy.
The dynamic senior eventually found Jaylon Dorsey all alone in the end zone, one of four touchdowns Harris accounted for in Dunbar’s 40-24 victory over Harper on Saturday at Gately Stadium.
Harris rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 135 and two scores. Lyndell Wafford added two touchdowns to put Dunbar (1-2) in the win column after opening with two quality suburban opponents (Vernon Hills and No. 6 Lincoln-Way East). Harper dropped to 2-1.
“We like to play tough teams,” said Harris, who is being recruited by several Division I schools as an athlete. “We got better, and it prepared us for the city teams. Everybody in the city underestimates us because we’re Dunbar, so we’ll see.”
Dunbar coach Glenn Johnson is a bit concerned that his Mightymen are overly reliant on Harris.
“He’s a playmaker, and you want to get the ball to your playmakers,” Johnson said. “But my God.”
