Crystal Lake South 10, No. 14 Cary-Grove 7

Brad Walovitch’s opportunity to kick a game-winning 52-yard field goal went nowhere near the goal post.

One yard made quite a difference Friday night in Cary-Grove.

Three minutes after missing far short and wide, Walovitch drilled a 51-yarder with six seconds left to give Crystal Lake South a 10-7 upset victory over No. 14 Cary-Grove.

No. 5 Mount Carmel 40, De La Salle 7

There were no Gatorade baths or rides on his players’ shoulders around the field. Frank Lenti celebrated with a lot of hugs and handshakes after he entered the Illinois High School Association record book by tying former Richards coach Gary Korhonen with his 306th career victory.

No. 5 Mount Carmel was as methodical in its 40-7 Catholic League crossover victory over De La Salle as Lenti was low-key in tying the record for most wins in Illinois. Korhonen has 315 total wins, but nine of those were in Iowa.

Wheaton North 24, Naperville North 13

Wheaton North coach Joe Wardynski figured someone on his defense would have to step up in Friday night’s DuPage Valley Conference opener at home against Naperville North.

But with John Peltz running your offense, who needs defense?

The junior quarterback engineered a machine-like second-half attack and the Falcons’ defense made just enough big plays to post an impressive 24-13 victory at Rexilius Field. Safe all night behind his offensive line, Peltz was 8-for-17 for 143 yards and rushed 17 times for 71 yards. Junior Patrick Sharp rushed 29 times for 146 yards and a score.

No. 17 Montini 13, Marmion 6

By shadowing two and three defenders toward his side of the field, Marmion wasn’t going to let Montini receiver Jordan Westerkamp beat them with his hands Friday night.

The senior still managed to make an impact — with his legs — as his 4-yard touchdown on an end-around with 5 minutes, 7 seconds remaining was the game-winner in the No. 17 Broncos’ 13-6 Suburban Christian Blue victory over the Cadets in Lombard.
