A South Side man faces a burglary charge after he was shot by a retired Chicago police sergeant when the man broke into the former officer’s property, police said.

Carl Williams, 51, was charged with burglary after he was arrested in connection with the burglary in the 1300 block of East 67th Street late Friday morning, police said.

Officers were called to the home about 11:30 a.m. after Williams broke into the building, police said. Williams used a three-pound sledge hammer to break a window, according to court documents.

The sergeant saw Williams with the hammer and shot him, police said.

After being shot, Williams ran to the 6600 block of South Kenwood Avenue, where officers found him hiding under some bushes, police said. Officers discovered Williams had been shot in the lower right arm, police said.

Williams was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.

Williams, of the 7200 block of South East End Avenue, appeared this afternoon in Cook County Bond Court, dressed in a hospital gown with a bloody cast on his arm. Cook County Judge Jackie Portman set Williams’ bail at $40,000.
