Two Chicago-area gas utilities fared poorly again in a customer satisfaction survey released Wednesday.

Scores for Peoples Gas and Nicor Gas were two of three lowest among large utilities in the Midwest region, J.D. Power and Associates said today. Out of 1,000 points, Nicor Gas and Peoples Gas received 592 and 587, respectively. Their scores were well below the average score of 614 among large Midwest utilities. Only Ameren Illinois was lower, with a score of 577.

Customer satisfaction scores for Peoples Gas and Nicor Gas in 2010 were about the same.

J.D. Power measures billing and payment, price, corporate citizenship, communications, customer service and field service. The study is based on more than 62,000 responses from customers of the nation’s 75 largest gas utilities. The average satisfaction score was 627.

North Shore Gas, a third Chicago area utility, was not included in the survey because it is too small. North Shore Gas and Peoples Gas, which serves Chicago, are both subsidiaries of Chicago-based Integrys Energy Group Inc.

A spokesperson for Peoples Gas could not immediately be reached for comment. A Nicor spokesman said he had not seen the survey and could not immediately comment.
