For Melanie and Robert Haag of Manhattan, the birth of their baby boy on Friday was a special day, but for officials at Silver Cross Hospital’s Joliet campus, Alan Haag’s birth at the hospital signaled the end of 117 years of tradition.
The boy became the last of thousands of babies to have been born at the hospital’s Joliet campus as it ushers in a new birthing center at the hospital’s New Lenox facility, officials said.
Alan Haag’s mother and 4-year-old sister, Caelan, were born in the Joliet facility, officials said in a press release today. Baby Alan was delivered by Dr. John Bush at 10:05 p.m. Feb. 24 and weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces and was 201/2 inches long.
After the boy was born, he received gift baskets from the staff and even a T-shirt saying “We Saved the Best for Last” that was made by Elise Wilson, the midnight nurse that works in the Silver Cross Hospital Birthing Center.
The new birthing center at the New Lenox Hospital has 12 birthing suites designed for labor, delivery and recovery, officials said.
Children’s Memorial neonatologists and pediatric doctors will be onsite, officials said.
