OMAHA, Nebraska (Reuters) – Michael Phelps turned the

tables on his great rival Ryan Lochte to win the 200 meters

freestyle final at the U.S. Olympic trials on Wednesday and

remain on course for another massive haul at the London Games.

The greatest swimmer the world has seen, Phelps needed every

every ounce of energy and all of his big-race experience to

defeat Lochte in a thrilling duel, the pair going stroke for

stroke over all four laps.

Regal Federer dazzles, Stosur knocked out

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s Prince Charles made a rare, if

fleeting, visit to Wimbledon on Wednesday but lingered long

enough to see Roger Federer produce another regal performance

on Centre Court and move serenely into the third round. Swiss

Federer, bidding for a record-equaling seventh men’s singles

title at the All England Club, aired his full repertoire of

shots to outclass Fabio Fognini 6-1 6-3 6-2 in front of an

appreciative Royal Box and 15,000 entranced fans.

After top pick shoo-in Davis, draft appears wide open

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Anthony Davis of the University of

Kentucky appears sure to be taken by the New Orleans Hornets as

first choice in Thursday’s NBA Draft, but the rest is a

guessing game as to where the league’s brightest talents land.

The draft provides the life-blood of the league, and the 30

teams comb the U.S. college system and leagues around the globe

for the best young talent.

Franklin books London berth as Coughlin struggles

More than one badge of honor for Leyva

SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) – A circuitous journey to

the United States from Cuba as a baby has helped world parallel

bars champion Danell Leyva set himself lofty goals as he aims

for Olympic glory at next month’s London Games. The 20-year-old

Cuban native is one of 15 gymnasts competing this week in

Olympic trials for five spots on the U.S. team and he would

dearly love to win gold medals for his adopted country and also

for the entire Latin community.

Spot-on Fabregas sends Spain into Euro 2012 final

DONETSK (Reuters) – Spain’s ‘Tiki Taka’ passing was

off-tempo at the Donbass Arena but the holders, unable to hurt

Portugal in 120 minutes of stalemate, broke their hearts in a

penalty shootout to reach the final of Euro 2012 on Wednesday.

Substitute Cesc Fabregas converted the winning spot-kick, off

the inside of the post, to set off wild celebrations from the

Spanish players.

U.S. sprinters’ coach wants 100 runoff delayed

EUGENE, Oregon (Reuters) – Bob Kersee, coach of two

sprinters who tied for third place in the women’s 100 meters at

the U.S. Olympic trials, wants any runoff to determine who goes

to the London Games delayed until at least next Tuesday. USA

Track & Field (USATF) spokeswoman Jill Geer has said the re-run

between Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh needs to take place by

Sunday to allow the governing body time to finalize its team.
