Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights for relationship comedy “Life Partners,” starring

Leighton Meester

and

Gillian Jacobs

.

The film had its world premiere last month at the

Tribeca Film Festival

. Adam Brody and Gabourey Sidibe also star in “Life Partners,” directed by Susanna Fogel from a script she co-wrote with Joni Lefkowitz.

Production companies are Red Crown Prods. and Haven Entertainment. Producers are Joni Lefkowitz, Jordana Mollick, Brendan Bragg, Riva Marker and Daniela Taplin Lundberg.

Meester and Jacobs portray co-dependent best friends whose relationship shifts when Jacobs’ character starts a romance with a man, leaving her lesbian friend in a panic about her impending 30th birthday.

Ronnie Schieb gave the film

a strong review for Variety

at Tribeca, calling it a “well-scripted, intriguingly acted effort to mine the theme of prolonged adolescent best-buddyism through two women — one straight, the other gay.”

UTA and WME represented the filmmakers in the negotiation with Magnolia’s John Von Thaden.
