Crain’s Chicago Business is reporting: Target plans to open two smaller-format stores in Chicago, in the former Fox & Obel space in Streeterville and on Ashland Avenue in Lakeview.

The planned TargetExpress stores are a fraction of the size of the typical Target store, which can be as large as 130,000 square feet.

The news comes after Target announced this month it planned to close several underperforming stores early next year including two in the Chicago area.

A Target spokeswoman declined to comment on the report.

Fox & Obel closed in October. East Coast specialty grocer Mrs. Green’s announced plans to move into the space the next month but pulled out of the deal in September, according to published reports.
