Sports show host Jim Rome referred to marching bands as “dorks running around with their instruments” on New Year’s Day and later tweeted an apology. This begs two questions: 1) Who knew Rome was still working since his days on “The Deuce”? 2) When’s the last time a jock (or jock wannabe) called someone a “dork”? “Revenge of the Nerds” in 1984?

In honor of Rome, here are some other “dork” moments in sports.

2013: UFC fighter Chael Sonnen calls LeBron James a dork on “Jim Rome on Showtime.” Maybe that’s where Rome got the idea.

2012: The Dallas Mavericks’ Twitter account refers to Dirk Nowitzki as “Dork” in a tweet. Typo or Freudian slip?

2010: During a tense time between the White Sox and then-manager Ozzie Guillen, Guillen’s son Oney tweets, “I hope the dorks aren’t running the organization or else were (bleeped). 3 geeks who never played baseball a day in there life telling telling experts what to do.”

2009: ESPN columnist Bill Simmons nicknames Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey “Dork Elvis” because of his expertise in sports statistics.

1992: Tennis great John McEnroe yells at a heckler: ”Do you have any problems, other than that you’re unemployed and a moron and a dork?”
