“Black Sails” navigates its second season beginning Jan. 24, and Starz has released a brand new trailer that shows Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) scheming once again.
“I believe there is an opportunity at hand where we control our own future,” the pirate says.
It’s not clear if Flint is able to seize that opportunity, but danger most certainly awaits the crew of his ship, the Walrus. Later in the clip, Flint walks past a man with a “pirate” sign on his chest swinging by a noose.
Adding to the foreboding feel of the trailer, Flint says, “Everyone’s a monster to someone.” He’s more than likely making the statement as an excuse for something he has done, but we’ll find out for sure later this month.
As Season 1 ended, Flint and his crew still were chasing after the gold treasure from the sunken Spanish galleon Urca de Lima. In Season 2, the show will flash back before Flint became a pirate, when he was still part of the British Navy.
We’ll see the star of the romance between Flint and Miranda Barlow (Louise Barnes), and meet wig-wearing Lord Thomas Hamilton, who is played by Rupert Penry-Jones. Hamilton sets Flint on a mission to save Nassau.
New characters include the pirate Ned Low (Tadgh Murphy) and Abigail Ash (Meganne Young), the daughter of the Carolina colony’s governor who Flint uses as a bargaining chip to ensure freedom for Nassau.
Characters who survived Season 1 and will be back include Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New), Captain Charles Vane (Zach McGowan), John Silver (Luke Arnold) Max (Jessica Parker Kennedy), Rackham (Toby Schmitz), Anne Bonny (Clara Paget) and Mr. Scott (Hakeem Kae-Kazim).
Set a couple decades before the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel “Treasure Island,” “Black Sails” returns at 8 p.m. Jan. 24 for its second season. It already has been renewed for a third season.
