The University of Chicago Medical Center is best equipped to handle a new level-one trauma center on the South Side, according to an Illinois Department of Public Health study. But the university is not interested in opening a new trauma center. The report notes that getting injured far from a trauma center reduces a gunshot victim’s chances of survival, and that many parts of the South Side can be more than a 5-mile drive from a trauma center.

Read more about the issue here, and read the IDPH study here.
