Five aid workers kidnapped by unknown gunmen two months ago have been found dead in a volatile region of southern Afghanistan, an official said Saturday.

The five Afghan men, who worked for the Save the Children charity, were abducted nearly eight weeks ago in Uruzgan province.

“Villagers found the bodies of these people around the Chinarto district on Friday,” said provincial spokesman Dost Mohammad Nayab. The men were shot dead, he said.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and killing of the aid workers. Local media cited family members as saying Taliban militants had demanded a prisoner exchange.

Kidnapping is the latest in a string of security challenges in Afghanistan.

In February, gunmen abducted 31 members of the Shiite Hazara minority on the Kabul-Kandahar highway. Government officials said the kidnappers are demanding a prisoner exchange.
