Skokie School District 68 has added a new Safety Tip Line to its website in an effort to stop bullying and other at-risk behaviors in its schools, the district announced this week.

“The Tip Line is designed for use as an online reporting and prevention tool,” the district stated in a note that was sent to District 68 parents. “If students, parents or community members know of an unsafe situation in school (bullying, weapons, drugs or alcohol, etc.), they can pass on that information to school personnel.”

District officials said there wasn’t one incident that inspired the addition of the tip line. “The safety of our students is our top priority,” the district stated.

The district is still instructing parents to speak directly to their child’s teacher or a school administrator when making a report about bullying and other safety concerns at the school.

But sometimes students and parents are not comfortable doing so, said District 68 Superintendent Jim Garwood.

“To that end, the Tip Line allows for anonymous reporting,” he said. “The person making the report may also choose to share their contact information if they wish for direct communication from an administrator.”

Parents making a report are being asked by the district to include as much detailed information as possible to assist administrators in investigating and addressing any concern.

Online reports received outside of school hours will not be reviewed and acted upon until school is back in session, Garwood said. Law enforcement should be notified regarding any concern requiring immediate action, he said.
