An intoxicated man who crashed into a tree Saturday afternoon and had to be extricated from his vehicle is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, South Elgin police said.

The accident occurred at about 12:15 p.m. at Sundown Road and Renee Drive, Sgt. Mike Doty of the South Elgin Police Department said.

Ronald Gates, 42, of the 1100 block of Sunbury Road, South Elgin, was charged with driving under the influence, no insurance, and various traffic violations, police said.

He was extricated by firefighters from South Elgin and the Countryside Fire Protection District and transported to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin for treatment.

No details about what caused the crash were released.

Sundown Road was closed from Kenilworth Avenue to Renee Drive during the initial review of the crash. South Elgin police continue to investigate, Doty said.
