Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to match every dollar aldermen spend on public art installations next year — up to $500,000 in all — as part of a new neighborhood arts project he announced Monday.

Aldermen get $1.3 million in so-called menu money each year to spend on ward projects such as new trees and street lights.

As part of the new 50×50 Neighborhood Arts Project, aldermen can spend up to $10,000 of this money for art installations. Emanuel said he will match each dollar, drawing the money from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events budget.

Guidelines for artists interested in applying for the initiative are to be posted in January.

Emanuel is also creating the Public Art Youth Corps, a paid internship program that would link young adults with community organizations to work on public art projects.

Meanwhile, the city is set to award $535,000 to eight cultural organizations as part of the annual IncentOvate program that encourages creation of large-scale cultural experiences.

Two $50,000 grants, to be announced next month, are slated to support public art-focused projects. Six groups were awarded a total of $400,000 under last year’s program.

A schedule of 2017 public art events and exhibitions is set to be released in January.

Plans include the “50×50 Invitational,” featuring works by 50 artists representing 50 wards, scheduled for February to April at the Chicago Cultural Center, and a celebration on Daley Plaza in August for the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the Picasso sculpture.
