Homewood residents showed their love for the Cubs on Friday and Saturday nights. A large screen and bleachers were set up in the village’s downtown so residents could join their neighbors to watch the first World Series games in Wrigley Field since 1945.

Despite the Cubs’ two losses to Cleveland — Friday’s 1-0 shutout and Saturday’s 7-2 drubbing — several hundred residents came out to Martin Avenue Square on Ridge Road between the two nights to cheer for the Cubs beneath garden lights in a bricked terrace adjoining La Voute Bistro + Bar. La Voute is a French-inspired restaurant that recently celebrated its one-year anniversary in downtown Homewood.

“We asked ourselves what we could do to bring the excitement here,” said Zach Thomas, director of Community Marketing and Events for Homewood. “We wanted to keep it low key, and La Voute seemed like the perfect partner.”

The bistro opened its patio seating to fans and served cocktails and snacks to the shifting crowd.

“We just walked right over, got to have a beer, and we’re good,” said Homewood resident Amy Green, whose 2-year-old son, Oliver, came decked out in Cubs gear.

Matt Denne, sitting between two lifelong Cubs fans, confessed to being a White Sox fan at heart, but said, “I’ve got to come out and support them, though — this is history in the making.”
