Goose Island’s brewpub is throwing itself a goodbye-for-now party.
On Sunday night, the last night of service before the 28-year-old pub closes for a months-long renovation, a handful of beers will be poured to mark the occasion — and empty the cellar.
Among them will be Cran Bruin, a tart Belgian brown ale made with cranberries, plus 2016 Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout and 2015 Proprietor’s Bourbon County Brand Stout, all of which will be tapped at 6 p.m.
Other Bourbon County beers had already been tapped as of Friday afternoon, including the 2016 versions of Bourbon County Brand Stout and Bourbon County Brand Barleywine and the 2014 Bourbon County Barleywine (which I drank and … oh yes). Four other barrel-aged beers made at the brewpub were also on tap (Big Lazy Joe, an imperial brown ale made with coffee, is also worthy of an … oh yes).
Reduced prices will happen all day: $6 for barrel-aged beers and $3 for everything else.
In a bid to clean out the kitchen, a buffet will be on-going from the time doors open at 11 a.m. After that, food truck Bruges Brothers will be on hand.
At 8 p.m., there will be a raffle of bottled beers made at the Clybourn pub, plus bottles of past Bourbon County variants. Tickets cost $5; proceeds will go to the Alliance for the Great Lakes.
Goose Island founder John Hall will be on hand to bid farewell to the late-’80s version of a pub he started in 1988 after a career with Container Corp. of America. He sold the Goose Island production brewery to Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2011 and the brewpub to the same company last year. Current Goose Island leadership has pledged to reopen a more modern-looking space in an increasingly competitive craft beer environment.
As the Guys Drinking Beer website points out, the brewery is doing some good before closing: it’s giving away 62 pounds of hops to home brewers and some barrels too.
