I’d like to respond to Heather Wilhelm’s Monday column “The media’s ‘Me-me-me’ party line.” Wilhelm derides some of her fellow journalists by stating many in the media are “hyperventilating” and do not have the ability “to separate important news from run-of-the-mill Trump.” Nothing about President Donald Trump is run of the mill. He has spent the last 18 months attacking the media and most recently tweeted that “The FAKE NEWS media is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!”
It bears repeating: Our president believes the media is our enemy. One would think Wilhelm would be outraged by our president’s attempts to undermine and delegitimize her profession. Not since Richard Nixon has there been a president who has shown similar levels of disrespect and contempt for journalists and the media. This should alarm all of us, but especially those whose job it is to bring us the news each and every day.
