Last November, the Moraine Township Board of Trustees approved a pay cut for township supervisor from $65,000 to $45,000, along with cutting health insurance and pension benefits through the Illinois Municipal Retirement (IMRF).

Having served as Moraine Township supervisor for the last four years, Anne Bassi has benefited from the higher salary and additional benefits before the reductions take effect for the term of office that starts May 15. These actions have had no impact on her annual income, though she benefited from the perception that she was forgoing personal compensation for the benefit of residents. In actuality, Bassi got her benefits but others who succeed her will not.

It should also be noted Bassi didn’t refuse any benefits while she held the position, but the reduction in pay and benefits has made the position less attractive if someone wanted to run against her. Is this responsible behavior of a leader? This seems more like a play out of Michael Madigan’s playbook than the actions of a township supervisor. This action seems irresponsible and short-sighted and not the action of a true leader.

It’s time to elect leadership that isn’t going to have an agenda, we’re there to serve the people of Moraine Township. We’re going to do more with less!
