For Lincoln-Way Central’s Cam and Dylan Post, there’s nothing like a little brotherly competition.

Dylan, a sophomore catcher/outfielder, hit a three-run homer in the first inning Friday. Cam, a senior catcher/outfielder, was determined to provide a response.

“Our pitching coach, (Jason) Helbling, started talking to me,” Cam Post said. “He was like, ‘Your brother’s doing more for us.’ I was like, ‘OK, I’ve got to match him.'”

It was a match made in New Lenox as Cam hit his own three-run homer in the fourth as the host Knights pulled away for an 8-4 win over Marist.

“I had to hit mine to center field instead of right like Dylan’s,” Cam said.

The younger brother acknowledged defeat in the distance competition, at least for now.

“I’ve got to give him credit,” Dylan said. “His was a little deeper. Any day we can both hit home runs is a good day. We’d never been on the same team before high school, so this is a lot of fun.”

Marist (0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI triple from Jason Hodges, who finished 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Knights (1-1) responded in a big way with four runs in the bottom of the inning. After Jake Pott picked up an RBI single, Dylan Post launched his three-run homer.

“I was yelling probably the loudest of anyone when he hit that,” Cam said. “I was jumping up and down.”

Marist scored twice in the third, with Mike Markett producing a RBI single, and tied the game 4-4 on Matt Donahue’s sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Cam Post, though, hit his three-run home run in the fourth to give the Knights the lead for good.

Cam, an Oakland recruit, and Dylan, a Houston recruit, are sharing catching duties this season. Dylan was behind the plate Friday with Cam in left field.

“I really like it,” Dylan Post said. “It gives us a lot of rest for our legs. Playing the outfield is always fun.”

Lincoln-Way Central coach Mitch Nowicki enjoys watching the Post brothers interact.

“Dylan’s a great talent,” Nowicki said. “And Cam is teaching him along the way and pushing him to be as good as he can be.”

Trey Korbel got the win in relief for the Knights, allowing one run over two innings. Pott and Brandon Bennitt each went 2-for-3 and scored a run for Central.

Bryson Lewis came off the bench for Marist and went 2-for-2 with a double.

“We’re a really young team and we have a long way to go,” Marist coach Kevin Sefcik said. “Those Post kids can really swing the bats. We’re glad to play good competition and get better.”
