Edward planning practice emergency drill

Edward Hospital in Naperville will conduct a full-scale safety drill Thursday, April 20, to ensure employees and emergency workers are prepared in the event of a disaster in Naperville or a neighboring community.

Naperville police, pire and emergency management departments will participate in the event from 7 to 10 a.m., according to a news release from Edward. It will affect various areas of the hospital at 801 S. Washington St.

“Prior to and during the drill, there will be a noticeable presence of law enforcement and fire department personnel and vehicles on the Edward Hospital campus and inside Edward Hospital,” the release said.

Between 5:30 and 11:30 a.m., drivers will not be able to access the Edward Hospital campus by turning right onto the hospital’s North Drive from southbound Washington Street and drivers exiting the North Circle in front of Edward Hospital will not be able to turn right onto North Drive to get to Washington Street, the release said.

All other entry/exit points and roads at the hospital will be open.

Ogden lane closures start Monday

Construction work to replace a water main on Ogden Avenue between Wisconsin Street and Burlington Avenue begins the week of Monday, April 17.

To accommodate the work, eastbound traffic on Ogden will be reduced to one lane from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Westbound lanes of Ogden will remain open, according to a news release from the city of Naperville. In addition, Wisconsin Street will be closed and inaccessible to all traffic to and from Ogden starting Monday and lasting about two weeks, depending on the weather.

Exact closure and re-opening dates will be communicated to residents and businesses via the road and utility work category in the City’s Naper Notify system, which the public can sign up for at www.napernotify.com, the release said. Plank Road is being set up as a detour.

Work is expected to be finished by July.

BGA holding ‘watchdog training’ program

The Better Government Association will conduct a Watchdog Training session on April 24, with information provided on obtaining documents through the Freedom of Information Act and ensuring government gatherings are open to the public through the Open Meetings Act.

This training, scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. at DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church, 1828 Old Naperville Road, is being done in collaboration with the League of Women Voters Naperville. It is free and open to the public.

Jaycees seeking Last Fling volunteers

The Naperville Jaycees are seeking volunteers to work at its four-day Last Fling festival over Labor Day weekend.

The event features live music, a carnival, Family Fun Land, Fling Mile, Rooster 5K and the Labor Day Parade. It’s the Jaycees largest annual fundraiser, with money donated to local charities.

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, a Baton Rouge, La.-based chain launched in 1996, will open April 25 at 698 S. Route 59. A ribbon-cutting will be held at 9 a.m.

“It’s exciting,” company marketing advisor Anna Ball said. “We have a very focused menu with high-quality products. (Our food) is always marinated for 24 hours. It’s never frozen. It does take four to six minutes to get your order. We make our Cane sauce – it’s tangy with a little bit of spice. It’s a product that stands out competitively.”

The company also prides itself on getting involved in the towns in which they’re located, which includes Oak Lawn and North Riverside in Illinois, she said.

“We do support our community,” Ball said. “We do the 15 percent giveback during fundraisers, we’ll do sponsorships, we have our website, CanesAndCommunity.com.”

Dog adoption event at COD

Residents looking for a new dog can visit with adoptable dogs from the Naperville Area Humane Society during an event being held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at the student lounge, Room 1200, on the main campus of the College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn.

The benefit is organized by students from the Intro to Mass Communication course.

Free autism screening scheduled

The Caravel Autism Health Clinic will hold free autism screenings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 20, at the DuPage Children’s Museum, 301 N. Washington St.

Dr. Mike Mihajlovic, a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in Autism Spectrum Disorder assessments and treatments, will conduct the screenings.

North Central College and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, will host a forum on climate change at 9:30 a.m. May 6 at the college’s Science Center, 131 S. Loomis St.

Tom Skilling, chief meteorologist at WGN, is the featured speaker. Other speakers include Paul Bloom, associate professor of physics at North Central College; Mary Gade, president of Gade Environmental Group; and Doug Sisterson, research meteorologist at Argonne National Laboratory.

The forum is free and open to the public, but a ticket must be obtained at the college’s box office, 171 E. Chicago Ave., or by calling 630-637-7469.

Greene Valley overlook to open May 6

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County will open its scenic overlook at Greene Valley Forest Preserve, near Hobson Road and Route 53, Naperville, on weekends starting May 6.

Overlook hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 29, weather permitting.

District staff can help answer questions and provide binoculars. The overlook allows visitors to bird watch, launch nonpowered crafts with a permit and see the Chicago skyline in the distance. The 1.9-mile Hawk Trail circles the hill’s base.

Naperville tulip bulb sale May 12

The Naperville Park District’s annual tulip bulb sale will take place at 8 a.m. Friday, May 12, at the Riverwalk pavilion near the district’s Administration Building, 320 W. Jackson Ave.

The bulbs for sale will include those blooming along the Riverwalk, in front of the Administration Building and at other district locations.

Bulbs will be sold for $3 per dozen on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of 10 dozen per person.

Park district staff members who manage the Riverwalk flower beds will be available to answer questions about storing and planting the bulbs.
