A man accused of fatally shooting a 15-year-old boy and wounding his mother in a 2011 home invasion pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to a minimum of 50 years in prison this week, according to prosecutors and court records.
Sean Williams, 38, charged with being the shooter in the attack, was sentenced Monday by Cook County Judge Evelyn Clay in the killing of Andre Vasquez, 15, and the shooting of his then-33-year-old mother, according to prosecutors and court records. Davonta Williams, the other robber, was sentenced to 34 years in prison in February, and Jennifer M. Vojinovic was sentenced to 24 years in prison last fall after pleading guilty to being the getaway driver.
Vojinovic and Sean and Davonta Williams were arrested following the Oct. 18, 2011, killing in the 3400 block of North Lawndale Avenue when a Chicago Streets and Sanitation worker spotted and followed them and called police.
Two robbers had stormed into the home in the Avondale neighborhood, duct-taping the family that lived there while looking for drugs and a gun. They found neither, and left with just a gold jewelry box, a cell phone, credit cards and the mother’s state identification card, according to police and prosecutors.
After stashing them in a waiting car, one of the gunmen returned to the home to kill the family. He shot and killed Andre Vasquez and wounded his mother in the head. But he couldn’t find Vasquez’s then-14-year-old sister, who had managed to escape, prosecutors have said.
Police say they arrested the suspects, including the driver of the car, based on the car’s description and license plate. Authorities say they found 9mm and .25-caliber handguns and the stolen items.
All three suspects confessed following their arrest, prosecutors have said.
Sean Williams is now in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections. He has a projected parole date of Sept. 18, 2064, when he would be 86 years old, according to the agency’s website.
