Police took a Boone Grove High School student into custody Wednesday after he was found with a knife and alcohol on school grounds, police said.
The Porter Township school resource officer was called to the school around noon Wednesday after receiving a report that a student allegedly had a knife and alcohol, according to a news release from Sgt. Jamie Erow, public information officer for the Porter County Sheriff’s Department.
Another student reported seeing the suspect, 16, a sophomore, with a knife in his right front pocket when his shirt rose up from lifting his arms, a release said. The student reported the incident to Principal Clay Corman.
Corman acted immediately and called the student to his office and questioned him about having the knife on school property, according to the release.
The student denied having a knife but when he was asked to empty his pockets, a 3-inch blade pocketknife was located in his front right pants pocket, a release said.
Corman also searched the student’s backpack for further contraband and reportedly located a small bottle of Bacardi rum, the release said. The student admitted to knowing the alcohol was in the backpack, according to the release.
The boy was taken into custody without incident on misdemeanor charges of possession of a knife on school grounds, and minor in possession of alcohol.
Police transported him to the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center.
