Park District to host lunch for veterans

The Fox Valley Park District is hosting a Veterans Luncheon from noon to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave. in Aurora.

The event is free to veterans and will feature a turkey dinner sponsored by Upper Crust. Entertainment will be provided by vocalist Maureen Christine.

“We hold this luncheon each year to honor and salute veterans for the freedoms and opportunities they’ve provided us through their dedicated service,” said Park District spokesman Jeff Long in a press release.

The luncheon fee for non-veterans is $7 per resident and $11 per non-resident. Registration by Nov. 1 is required to assure seating.

The Fox Valley Park District has also proclaimed November as Veterans Appreciation Month and is providing veterans unlimited visits to the district’s fitness centers at no charge, according to the release.

Veterans and their families can get free admission to Prisco, Eola and Vaughan fitness centers throughout November.

The complimentary fitness and luncheon apply to all veterans and active military, as well as members of the National Guard and Reserves. Participants need to show a valid military ID card.

Geneva schools to hold technology forum

The Geneva Board of Education invites the community to the 2017 GenOvation Forum on Nov. 14 to learn about the district’s use of innovative practices and technologies in the classroom.

Students and teachers from across grade levels and schools will demonstrate practices and technologies that are helping to enhance learning, according to a press release from the district.

The event will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Geneva High School, 416 McKinley Ave., Geneva.

School Board members will be on hand to answer questions from the community, and refreshments will be provided by the Viking Coffee Shop.

Oswego program to focus on drug issues

Community Unit School District 308 will offer “Emerging Teen Drug Trends and Treatment Options,” presented by Gateway Foundation’s Clinical Supervisor Bob Chapman, at Oswego East High School.

The presentation is set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 15 and is free and open to all educators, parents and community members.

The program will cover why teens engage in substance use and the warning signs, new and popular drugs among teens and why they’re dangerous, the impact of drug use on teenagers’ brains, health, learning abilities and emotional maturity, and how to talk to kids about substance abuse, according to a press release from the district.

New leaders for Kiwanis Club of Aurora

The Kiwanis Club of Aurora recently installed its new leadership team for the 2017-18 administrative year.

The club’s new president is John Ross. Ross replaces Aurora Ald. Bill Donnell.

Kim Groom assumes the office of president-elect. New board members are Jenna Hahn, Sharon Mewmaw and Fred Neumann.

For more than 12 years, Ross has been the facilitator for Aurora Christian Ministry Network, a group of clergy and religious leaders. He also serves on the board of Wayside Cross Ministries, of which he is a past president. He is also a member of the Fox Valley Christian Ministerial Alliance.

The Kiwanis Club of Aurora currently has 102 members. The club is also the sponsor of new Kiwanis clubs in Oswego and Yorkville.

Turkey dinner planned at church

Shabbona United Church of Christ will hold its 124th annual turkey dinner and bazaar Nov. 16 at 104 E. Navaho in Shabbona.

Carry-out orders will be available from 4 to 6 p.m. Dine-in hours are 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Tickets at the door are $12 for adults, $6 for children under 10 years old. All carry-outs orders are $12.
